Crime has affected people in different ways. Neither I nor my parents and relatives have been victims of crime. Consequently, I have not been impacted by crime in any manner.
The 9/11/01 terrorist attacks
The 11th day of September 2001 will remain a dark day in memory of many Americans. On that fateful morning, 19 terrorists linked to the al-Qaeda group boarded four domestic airlines with a mission to crash the planes on tall buildings killing those on board, and those in and near the buildings. Two of the passenger airliner crashed in the New York City, specifically into the south and North towers of the World Trade Center. The crashes caused fires and collapsed the buildings in the complex and those in the surrounding. The third airliner crashed into the western portion of the Pentagon and caused it to collapse partially. The passengers aboard the fourth airline overcame the terrorists and the plane crashed in Pennsylvania, before arriving at the target, Washington, D.C.
The impacts
The attacks resulted in 2996 deaths, all the 19 terrorists died as well. The World Trade Center was a business hub housing many businesses like the securities. Following the attacks, the business was suspended for some days. When stock trading resumed, so many companies registered downward trends. In addition, many jobs were lost because some businesses were closed down.
The terrorist attacks have had adverse health impacts on the persons who had contact with the toxic debris from the collapsed buildings (Landrigan 514). Many people have died as a result of inhaling the toxic dust, and it is believed that many others have long-term effects from dust exposure (Landrigan 514). A bill has been signed into law that guarantees free testing to all the citizens who were affected by the 9/11/01 attacks.
The attacks also impacted cultural aspects of the U.S citizens. There was more appeal to promote patriotism, and this was done in churches and other social places as well as over the radio and TV stations. Many citizens strengthened their religious beliefs so that they could find solace in the church. On the other hand, other citizens could not see any religious interpretation to come into terms with the aftermath of the terrorist attacks.
The media involvement
The media play an all-important role in the spread of news and dissemination of information. After the 9/11/01 attacks in the U.S, the media was at the forefront in informing the world that the terrorist attacks had been launched in Washington, D.C, and New York City. Some TV stations simulated attacks using computer programs. The simulations made viewers understand what had happened on American soil for the first time (Comfort and Naim 310). The media was also instrumental in requesting citizens with information on the attacks to divulge it to the authorities.
The police involvement
The police were called into action following the terrorist attacks (Comfort and Naim 310). They were instrumental in fire fighting, together with firefighters. The bodies of casualties were moved from the debris of the collapsed buildings by the police. The police also rushed the injured victims to the hospital.
Advice to others
It is important for all persons and countries to be vigilant and put in place mechanisms to fight terrorist attacks. Countries worldwide should pass laws with stiff punishments and long-term measures to fight terrorist attacks.
