What do I like the most when I live in Vietnam and why?
Vietnam is located in the Indochina Peninsula, Southeast Asia, and the country shares borders with three main countries: China in the North, Laos in the Northwest, and Cambodia in the southwest. Vietnam has its own specific culture which is the most significant attraction for tourists from both inside and outside the country to keep coming to visit and travel in Vietnam.
As I am an international student who has to live far away from my homeland to study at the Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, majoring in Environmental Science and Management. I have to adapt to the new environment, new food, new people, and new culture which is the hardest for most people who live in their second country for the first time. However, after I live my student life for a bit longer I begin to absorb their culture, lifestyle, and almost everything. Nevertheless, sometimes get disturbed by busy and dangerous traffic. However, I also found out that the uniqueness of Vietnamese culture is the beautiful, kind, and friendly people, and the beautiful landmark which makes Vietnam more attractive and charming, but if you ask me what I like the most when I live in Vietnam and why? After staying in Vietnam for nearly three years experience, there are too many things I love about Vietnam I cannot just focus on only one thing but if I need to point out only one thing that I like the most in this wonderful country, I would proud to say that it is food.
Vietnamese food is very popular around the world, as well-known as Vietnam is the center of Southeast Asia food but they are more depending on rice, wheat, and legume, the abundance of fresh herbs, and fresh vegetables, using a little amount of oil to cook food at least to feel the treatment of food as the condiments. Vietnamese food must be one of the healthiest foods in the world, based on my 3 years of experience; here is my personal point of view about why Vietnamese food is excellent.
Firstly, it is delicious! No delicious food is complete without fresh ingredients but there are available all over the years in Vietnam because of the tropical weather that they can grow vegetables in any season. The most important to make palatable food you have to make sure that all the ingredients which you are going to cook your dishes are still fresh. Furthermore, the food is rich in use diet fresh vegetables, herbs, spices, and aromatics as a favor. It has been said that the best and most prominent feature of Vietnamese food is the exquisite, tasteful, colorful, flavorful, and full of fresh herbs as known as aromatics herbs.
For example Pho (Noodle soup), Pho is one of the most popular Vietnamese food. It is a traditional food, normally served with beef (pho bo) or chicken (pho ga). The soup contained very fresh ingredients more than you can imagine, such as vegetables, herbs, onion, and ginger to make the soup more flavorful. Additionally, before they serve you they also add some cilantro, chives, and bean sprouts. The seller provides you with a dish of extra vegetables on the table such as salad, basil, mint leaves, lime, and chilies which could be added to the noodle by the person who is dining.
Secondly, Vietnamese food is not only delicious but it’s a reputation as one of the healthiest and most balanced food in the world. As I have seen so far that all ingredients used to make Vietnamese cuisine are all fresh because delicious and healthy food comes from fresh and non-chemical ingredients. Vietnamese food covers all the dietary needs of food on protein, vitamins, carbohydrates, fats, lipids, and minerals because all ingredients come from the great natural diversity of agricultural products. Pho may be a good example of healthy food. A large bowl of pho (noodles soup) has between 300 and 600 calories each, and less than 3g of fat per serving, which means you can eat it daily for breakfast, lunch, or dinner as part of a calorie-controlled, and low-fat diet. If you are on diet, Vietnamese food is an excellent choice for you.
Eating style is also a very important factor that can affect the nutritional value of food, Vietnamese always eat with chopsticks, eat a variety of food, share with people around them, eat slowly, chew food a bit longer, taste the taste of food carefully and by doing this it will ultimately help digestion and assimilation of nutrients without causing excessive digestion system. Therefore, the Vietnamese cultural and social aspect of eating food is a reason why eating Vietnamese food is healthy.
Finally, we can make some delicious cuisine by ourselves, Vietnamese food is not that difficult to make, unlike other country’s cuisine. For example, in the last lecture on Vietnamese culture, a teacher gave us the task that each group has to cook one Vietnamese cuisine. The first time we all so excited that we will have a chance to make Vietnamese food, at the same time we all also shocked that how are we going to make it. We cannot! Will it be delicious or not? The questions keep coming to our minds non-stop. Then we talked to each other that at least we experience it whatever will happen just lets it be and Chi Minhchau is going to help us too. One day before, Chi Minhchau guided all groups to the market to buy ingredients, my group will cook Nem (fried spring rolls) so the ingredients included glass noodles, rice paper, dried mushrooms, onion, carrot, eggs, salt, fish sauce, black pepper, and oil for flying. For the meat, she will buy it for us tomorrow (the day we cook) she said if we buy it today it will not fresh until tomorrow. Normally, we use ground pork for Nem but our Indonesian friends can’t eat pork so we change to ground chicken. The day we made Nem Chi Minhchau told and guided us on every step that we need to do and now we found it out that it is not more difficult as we thought. As we were all beginners so we did it slowly, the teacher needs to hurry us up to finish the task on time, so everyone in my group helped each other, and finally, our Nem was ready to serve everyone. Now it is time for eating, each group shared their food and enjoyed eating delicious Vietnamese cuisine together. I would love to say thank you so much to teaching and Chi Minhchau for your hard work and kindness to make such an unforgettable memory for us.
Moreover, there is not only Pho is famous in Vietnamese cuisine as you have known. Aside from Pho, there is a ton of delicious food that you can enjoy any time of the day, so during your staying or visit to Vietnam, you will never get bored with eating Vietnamese food. Here are some famous Vietnamese cuisines aside from Pho.
· Banh Mi (Vietnamese sandwich) is a very famous meal for everyone in Vietnam and it’s great when you need a quick meal. The seller will offer you a wide range of meaning filling in Banh Mi, including Banh mi Trung (fried egg), Banh mi Thit nuong (grilled pork) or you can combo Trung that nuong (fried egg+grilled pork). Banh mi consists of pickled vegetables, pate, butter, cilantro, chilies, and black pepper.
· Xoi (sticky rice) is one of the most popular fast food in Vietnam, it’s a delicious and addictive dish, making people non-stop eat Xoi again after they tasted it once. There is a variety of Xoi that you can enjoy such as Xoi trung (sticky rice with a fried egg), Xoi that nuong (sticky rice with grilled pork), or combo Xoi Trung that nuong (sticky rice+fried egg+grilled pork) which my friends and I always eat whenever we have 10-15 minutes break time. It is quick, easy to eat, delicious, and cheap.
· Bun dau mam tom (Vietnamese noodle with shrimp paste sauce) is my favorite dish, all the components of Bun dau mam tom are served separately including noodle, grilled pork, herbs, vegetables, tofu, bean sprouts and the most significant is Mam tom (shrimp sauce), it has a very strong smell but when you put lemon juice in the taste is so delicious. You can’t find Bun dau mam tom in any country in the world except Vietnam only and you will really not count that you visited Vietnam without trying Bun dau mam tom.
In conclusion, Vietnam is a gorgeous country with beautiful geography, rich history, delicious cuisine, and meaningful culture. Personally, once I visit Vietnam I truly fall in love with the wonderful country. I really believe in my words that you will also agree with me when you come to Vietnam and get the wonderful and unforgettable experience which you never ever get from anywhere else.
