History repeats itself. While many people tend to disagree with this saying, others, including myself, firmly agree with it. Looking back at past events, whether they were political, economic, cultural, or even religious, it can be seen that very similar situations are happening nowadays, if not identical. These events work in cycles, and in this essay, I will use an example that will vividly elaborate on my point of view.
Throughout history, many groups of people have been oppressed for one reason or another. For instance, the oppression of people based on their skin color was a dark time for people of color. They were treated worse than second-class citizens. In fact, they were treated as slaves. They had no rights and they were marginalized on all fronts. These people were not allowed to go to the same bathrooms as white people did. They had to sit at the back of the bus, and if a white person wanted their seat, they had to give it up. People of color were consistently treated as criminals, and they had no right to defend themselves against white people. All of these acts of discrimination were only based on the color of their skin.
A similar event that can be seen in recent days is the oppression of specific ethnic groups based on their religious beliefs. Muslims, for instance, are almost always treated as enemies or terrorists that everyone should be afraid of. Muslims are going through random airport checks that are not so random. In fact, these checks are due to classifying Muslims into a specific stereotype. These stereotypes have generated hate towards this group of people and made them receive the treatment of third-class citizens.
The biggest similarity between these two groups is that they are marginalized based on their background with no understanding of their true nature. In addition, these two groups of people are continuously being treated as criminals, and if anything were to happen where one or both of these groups were in place, they would be the first ones to blame. As for the differences between these two groups, it can be seen that the reason people of color were racially profiled is due to the color of their skin, and Muslims were profiled based on their faith. Furthermore, people of color are now somewhat in a better situation than they were before due to laws in place and organizations that back them up. Yet, this cannot be said for Muslims, as their case needs more extensive work.
Overall, it can be said that history does repeat itself. People are being targeted and marginalized based on color or faith. This is why we should learn from history and try to avoid the mistakes of the past to have a better future. It is on us to create a better present and educate the new generation so they do not make the same mistakes as our ancestors did before us.
