Holiday Harmony, the daughter of the Northern Soul singer and songwriter Jimmy Holiday, is a poet and choreographer. She mainly aims at testing the limits of memory and language of her readers through poems and prose. In her work, she tries to connect with her readers through the use of different genres which include love, violence, music, and history. One of her works consists of the ‘Negro League Baseball which she mainly explains about her relationship with her father and her life in Los Angeles where she moves with her mother after the death of her father.
In the poem, ‘A Series of Events Linked by Casualty,’ Harmony Holiday tries to explain how despite the physical presence of the person she talks of in the poem, she still has the feeling of loneliness because the individual seems not to be giving her the attention she so desires. She uses the romantic theme in her book to try and explain how despite their everyday contact, there is still a feeling of void. She tries to connect with the reader of how her father leaves her life just when they were starting to connect. She does this by blaming the gun for shooting the elephant earlier and faster than expected. She also makes the reader understand some of her efforts in fighting racism by use of romantic words. The aspect of gender criticism is evident as she tries to explain her role as a female in ensuring inclusivity of the Black community in the country as a way of ending violence. The aspect of gender is also on how the lack of connection between her and her father helps her to become who she is as she tries to be more accommodative to people and ensures that people connect, and in her case, it was through sports.
The poem ‘Like I’m Simple’ talks more about the void that her father has left in her life. Harmony says that despite the death of her father, their lack of closeness makes it difficult for her to remember the sung of his laughter. Due to this reason, she tries to explain how she finds it not pleasing for men to laugh loudly because, according to her, it is a vigorous noise. It is mainly because she never heard her father laugh though he was a hard worker and a quiet person. Due to this, she says that she prefers the whole process being sensible. It is mainly the use of gender criticism as she is addressing the male gender by comparing them to her father’s characteristics.
In ‘Dixie Is a Two Beat Thing’ holiday Harmony speaks of the role of her father in her life. She appreciates the way he works on his piano in a manner peculiar but admirable. Through this, Harmony learns how to carry out some of the activities in her life despite him leaving her life earlier than her expectations. Through this, the aspect of gender criticism is evident from the fact that it is through her father that she finds strength. It shows that it is through the opposite gender that one can derive power.
‘Death By Then’ whereby she expresses herself by the use of color green. From the poem, she talks about her sense of renewal after the whole ordeal after the death of her father. Through color green, there is the aspect of renewal, new energy, safeness, Harmony, and growth. It is through this that one understands how her sense of renewal and energy helps rejuvenate the people around her at a time they felt it was the end. Through her, there is the development of the ‘Negro League Baseball’ which gives a sense of hope to the people from the black community after facing rejection and violence from their white counterparts. Gender criticism is evident as it shows the ability of the female gender to help promote peace and unity between two warring races. It also shows the role of the female to maintain order within their environment and bring a sense of hope.
In ‘Assembly,’ we see the hope and new energy in the people through who had once lost hope towards life. Harmony uses her mother as an example of the various sacrifices the female gender undergo to ensure that there is peace, order, and Harmony within the people within their environment.
Throughout the poems, Holiday Harmony uses the theme of love to help her connect with her readers. It also helps to make the poems more attractive to her readers.
