The precise date was January 09, 1979, and it was no doubt a blissful day for the Al Mahmoud family because another member added to the already big family. But wait, it was not one member but two because I was born with a twin. I was given the name Ahmed Al Mahmoud. I have three brothers and three sisters, and as I said, one of my brothers is my twin. My father was a retired military officer and my mother is a housewife. After my kinder garden years, my father registered me and my twin brother at Abu Dhabi Military School. At that time, Fahad, my elder brother was already in grade three in the same military school. I graduated from military school; however, I did not complete my higher studies in the army because I decided to live a civilian life. My choice not to pursue a military life was a blessing in disguise because Abu Dhabi Investment Authority offered me a scholarship in the United States of America.
My Personal Challenges&
As the old saying states, ‘challenges are innate in man, as long as he lives. In my personal life, I was haunted by challenges both big and small. My childhood days were full of memories and learning experiences. My parents raised me to be a kind of man living with the values of politeness and calmness. I should not initiate troubles because this would tarnish the reputation of my extended family in the society that we live in. Additionally, it was a personal challenge for me to live up to the expectations of my family as they always compared me with my very smart brother when it comes to attitude, disposition, and academic performance. Also, my parents challenged me to take care of my twin brother and extend support whenever he needs assistance in his studies. I took this particular challenge with a silver lining because I believe they observe that I was quite smarter when it comes to school performance. Moreover, I considered living and studying abroad alone as one of the greatest personal challenges I ever experienced. The United States of America has a distinct culture from the UAE and I experienced culture shock but it was a personal challenge how I managed to successfully socialize and mingle with the Americans and other international students and friends. Being self-accounted for in living abroad, finding suitable accommodation, transportation, and insurance, and paying my monthly and annually related bills enabled me to live independently. Moreover, surviving and remaining healthy after suffering from chronological disease challenged me to remain steadfast and strong in the midst of life’s harsh realities. Finally, my personal challenges culminated with my finding a suitable job after graduation, getting married, and settling for an ideal married life with wonderful kids.
My Professional Challenges&
I vividly recall that my professional challenges started during my first grade at Abu Dhabi Military School, where I completed the required school levels with flying colors. To have your academic and professional qualifications prepared in the Military School is far way different from studying in a normal school. I also considered another huge challenge in studying and completing higher studies in the United States of America because the education system at the tertiary level is entirely different from the system of educating students in the UAE. Furthermore, it was an entirely different experience enjoying a scholarship sponsored by the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) because its contract with the scholar (student) stipulated that the authority is obligated to find a job for the scholar after graduation. When I graduated from the USA and when I come back to my home country, that contract was not followed anymore, although ADIA continued to pay my school tuition and provided me a monthly salary until graduation. I considered it a serious challenge to choose the best major for my study, hence I started a Computer Engineering course first only to find out that the course was newly introduced in the university and hence there was no guarantee that the school can produce quality graduates. It was then that my academic advisor intervened and advised me to change my major to avoid getting trouble authenticating my degree from our Ministry of Higher studies in UAE.
