In this age of globalization and technological advancement, it is essential that every professional has a refined and a broad international stance. Teachers College Columbia University is a college that boasts of an outstanding cultural and educational atmosphere. For this reason, I hope to advance my food and nutrition knowledge and career in TC Nutrition Education program. I also want to learn from its outstanding educational and research facilities. Graduating from TC with a master’s degree in Nutrition Education is one of my top goals. Therefore, I would work professionally and spend most of my time challenging myself for a better education. In this setting, I am guaranteed constant exposure to skills, ideas, and culture that will facilitate the enhancement of my food and nutrition career with unlimited potential.
I was inspired to pursue a career in food, nutrition, and dietetics from my childhood as a result of my love for various kinds of foodstuffs. When I used to go shopping with my father, I could not leave the store without a jar of fruit jam, a bottle of juice, or even a tin of ice cream. I grew up having the curiosity of knowing how such foodstuffs were processed. My parents could make me some of these foodstuffs at home, but I was always convinced that the packed ones were the best. So, as a child, I began to learn ideas and concepts related to various kinds of food, their importance in human bodies, and how they were refined and processed for consumption or preservation. At school, I often spent some of my free time looking for relevant resources in the library. This research changed my perception as I grew through various educational levels. I realized that nutrition is all about dietary guidelines and healthy eating by knowing multiple nutrient reference values.
I earned my bachelors degree in Family and Consumer Sciences with concentration in Food and Nutrition from The University of Tennessee at Martin. In this institution, I went through several dietetic-related courses. During the four years of study, I had an outstanding attitude towards my education and developed a good understanding of both my colleagues and instructors. During this period, I also had the opportunity for growth and self-reflection. This was crucial in times of challenges and disagreements among other learners. I found out that during such moments, people should have the patience of communicating and resolving conflicts. I was considered as the first Saudi student to graduate with a degree in Family and Consumer Sciences, and a concentration in Food and Nutrition.
Besides my university experience, I also developed my skills and experiences further as a volunteer in multiple organizations. One of my volunteer opportunities was serving food to residents at a skilled nursing facility (Van Ayer in Martin TN). I also had the opportunity to volunteer as a food preparing and serving assistant, at the South Fulton, TN First Baptist Church. Another volunteer opportunity was directing runners and traffic during a 5K run sponsored the Dresden, TN Farmers Market. Moreover, I discussed with children about making healthy food choices, at the Martin, Housing Authority. Additionally, I was a published guest writer explaining the importance of nutrition on the University of Tennessee at Martin newspaper ‘The Pacer.’
Finally, I hope that in the near future, Teachers College Columbia University will be of help towards elevating me to further career opportunities. I plan to work as a senior food and nutrition specialist after completing my masters degree. This opportunity will be versatile towards achieving such a valuable goal. I am convinced that through working and studying in your environment, I will be able to acquire more insightful professional foundation.
