Starting strong and setting goals.

When going through the chapter talking about starting strong and setting goals, I realized that most of the goals I had set for myself were very shallow. all I wanted was to be rich, but I hadnt planned on any means of achieving this as a long-term goal. Going through the chapter led me to believe that my goal wasnt a goal but a dream, this is because as opposed to dreams goals are something acting on as goals require action (Carlson, 2019). This drove me to understand as (Staley, 2016) claimed; that one must find a realistic path to help develop actual goals that aid in achievement of ones goals.

While going through the chapter I realized that Im prone to working hard rather than working smart, I tend to handle tasks and objectives by diving into them without much thought on how I would efficiently handle the work. To this day I believe that I carried this habit over to university from my high school experience where a huge workload was given and I would just immediately start doing the work without proper planning. Upon having the self-assessment mentioned in the chapter, I realized various methods of incorporating my core values and personality traits into my work ethic in order to adapt to a smart way of working.

According to my beliefs as brought about by previous experiences, working smart is usually confused with lazy shortcuts. For example, if I would look for an easy yet efficient way of handling a task it would be viewed as an act of laziness, just the fact that I’d get the same work result as someone without as much hustle and tussle would give me work less utility

Nevertheless, learning how to set goals in line with my values has shown more promise as one can see the main long-term goal being achieved by first achieving short-term objectives. In addition, by setting goals in accordance with focus my goals have more depth and are more realistic.
