Gender role stereotypes can have a huge effect on people. It can cause unfair treatment of a persons gender. It can also limit the development of a persons talents and abilities since stereotyping is all about the judgement of the society. Sexual objectification is a treatment of a person as an object. They are treated wrongly because of their sexual desire not regarding their personality and dignity. These have been a problem now that men and women are being wrongly portrayed.
Since almost everyone here in the Philippines can access media and its different types, sexual objectification and gender role stereotyping have become mainstream. Advertisements nowadays have become more liberal in selling products and services causing gender role stereotyping and sexual objectification. In advertisements, men are expected to be more masculine by being strong, independent, and muscular and women are expected to be sexy, dependent, and beautiful. Since advertisements would want to raise their income, they will do anything even if it trespasses morality. Media plays a big role in people who uses different types of it. Because of this, sexual objectification has been the problem of the century but no one dared to challenge the immoral tradition. Because of the Western influence, both men and women, in advertisements and in reality setup have been viewed as objects. Where ‘sex sells’ have been used and practiced until today. Different parts of men and women are used to sell products effectively but the adverse effects are not considered.
The rise of sexual objectification gives way to the different psychological effects to both men and women. Advertisements promote gender role stereotyping and sexual objectification which causes gender-biased society, anxiety, low self-esteem, insecurities, anxiety, depression, etc. Media and advertisements are perfectly entwined that furtherly magnifies the effects of sexual objectification and gender role stereotyping.
Sexual objectification and gender role stereotyping have become mainstream these days and base on what I have watched, it promotes women empowerment and it shows the equal responsibilities of men and women and the positions to the society nowadays. Today, we find women literate, educated, and liberated to lead. We find their surge forward not only in the political front, but also in social life where they act as agents of change contributing to economic development as well. If you educate girls, you give them the power to conquer the world. An educated girl or young woman knows her rights. An educated woman can perform a job with her acquired skills. She will be able to take care of herself without being reliant on anybody.
For Gender Role Stereotype, the absence of the concept of gender is one of the problem for a century that leads to Patriarchy, which a man who is powerful enough to lead an organization or any kind of group that degrades women’s ability. But think of it thoroughly, without power or superiority of a man, women can’t do nothing because women are depending to men.
On the other hand, sexual objectification is where women empowered by men were women are the property or object for their own pleasure and desire or reproduction. Nowadays, women were used as a sex object to sell products which is immoral for the dignity of ever women. Even if men were an object too, they are still superior because of masculinity, belittling of women’s femininity. The power of advertising is not appropriate when it comes to sexuality. They use it to gain money in exchange of dignity. If everyone are open about the education of morality and importance of self, they can still come up with the good product not only for advertisement but also to everyone’s image with moral and dignity.
Our society has a set of ideas about how we expect men and women to dress, behave, and present themselves. A stereotype is a widely accepted judgment or bias about a person or group even though its overly simplified and not always accurate. Stereotypes about gender can cause unequal and unfair treatment because of a persons gender. A gender stereotype is a generalised view or preconception about attributes or characteristics, or the roles that are or ought to be possessed by, or performed by women and men. A gender stereotype is harmful when it limits womens and mens capacity to develop their personal abilities, pursue their professional careers and make choices about their lives.
For centuries females have been often viewed as objects rather than human beings. Primarily, we see it in the media, video games and advertisements. Sexual objectification occurs when a womans body or body parts are singled out and separated from her as a person and she is viewed primarily as a physical object of male sexual desire. According to what I have watched, they empower idealistic women to make them more appealing to the eyes of the viewers. Seeminglessly to see, they are already seen as an object rather than a human being. Not just for women, but also for the men.
