On April 19, 1775, the first battle of the American Revolution began in Lexington, Massachusetts. However, the idea of getting their independence from the British had been in the minds of the colonists for a long time. They felt that the British were controlling and abusing them in an unfair way and that they deserved to be free and to govern themselves and grow as a free country. The colonists made a good choice by rebelling against the British because the British were being violent against them and they were controlling them financially and not letting them be free.
On March 5, 1770, a crowd of Boston boys and men surrounded a number of British soldiers and began taunting and cursing them while they pelted them with snowballs. Order quickly broke down, and the frightened soldiers fired into the crowd. When the shooting ended, several people were dead and more were wounded (Revere, 1770). This act is known as the Boston Massacre. It was one of the reasons why the colonists decided to rebel against the British. Here, we can see how the British were abusing their power and force on the colonists. Boys and men were throwing snowballs at the soldiers, even if this is wrong, nobody can get seriously hurt by a snowball. The soldiers responded by shooting their weapons that caused many people to die and be injured. This means that the soldiers were abusing their weapons and power to hurt the colonists and they were not being punished for it. This was one of the main causes that made the colonists realize that the British were violating their rights and that they could become more violent if they wanted to. The colonists had to stop these abuses and the only way was to get their independence.
The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations unlawful seizures, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states. In every stage of these oppressions, we have petitioned for redress in the most humble terms. Our repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act, which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people (Declaration of Independence, 1776). The colonists were very angry at King George because he was unfair to them in many ways. For example, he made the Stamp Act and began taxing the colonists unfairly. What was most unfair, was that the colonists did not have anyone to represent them and what was better for them in the British government. The King wanted to do whatever he wanted with the colonists and not let them defend their rights. The colonists thought that they were free people with rights and that the King wasn´t supporting them so they had to get rid of him. The colonists tried to do things in a peaceful way, but the King only responded by taxing them and being violent, In the end, the only choice that the colonists had to be free and be able to grow was to fight for their independence.
To conclude, I support the colonists for having fought for their freedom. I support them because the King was abusing their rights and being violent and also taxing them and controlling them in a way that they would never be able to have success. The American Revolution was based on many of the ideas that we learned from the philosophers and thinkers of Europe. I think that their ideas were very important to the colonists and they inspired them. Those ideas are still important today because freedom is something that people will always fight for.
