The Killing Nurses of the Third Reich
The documentary is about nurses during the Nazi period who participated in the Holocaust, violating their professional ethics. They also were involved in the murder of mentally ill and handicapped people. It is intended to show causes and consequences of ethical violations in the medical care. Moreover, it also depicts how professionals may be vulnerable to propaganda and are obligated to obey governmental rules.
The question of moral choice in the video is critical to regarding protecting human subjects in research. Despite how immoral the actions of nurses were, it is not ethical to share their information. Not sharing personal information, while doing research on a sensitive topic is key as it prevents public resonance.
Research Ethics Involving Human Subjects
The video is made to explain the research ethics and how to interact with human subject when conducting the research. It teaches the history of research ethics and provides real-life examples to demonstrate how people through different historical periods were examined. The video also allows future researchers to understand the importance of ethics.
Tuskegee Syphilis Study is a real-life example that shows how the research on people was conducted unethically and what were the consequences of it. The human subjects were not informed about their health condition, and were not treated in a proper way. Many people were died because of such study. So, in the research on individuals, subjects should be well-informed what will be examined.
The Belmont Report (Part One: Basic Ethical Principles)
The video describes the Belmont Report that contains three basic ethical principles that should guide researchers and IRBs. The principles are respect for persons, beneficence and justice that are main components of a successful research on human subjects. The video explains the significance of those principles and how they influence the research.
I think the respect for persons is the crucial part in protecting human subjects during the research. People should feel comfortable when revealing their personal stories. A researcher should not judge or show their reactions while interacting individuals. Moreover, the consent should be asked prior and during the research. Participants should also know that they can stop the research at any time.
The Belmont Report (Part Two: Applying the Principles)
This video is filmed to demonstrate how three basic ethical principles can be applied in different fields. It provides the explanation of the ethical applications in informed consent, risk/benefit ratio and selection of human subject. The video is intended to describe each filed and how it should be used.
The informed consent is the critical part of the research ethics. This is because human subjects should be informed about every action that will be taken with them and that it is on the voluntary basis. It allows comforting a person and making sure that they feel good about the research. As such, protecting a human subject from misunderstanding and misleading information.
Guiding Principles of Institutional Review Boards
The video shows regulations in the IRB committee and how members are chosen in it. It provides an information about the committee and how they act upon informed consent, risk/benefit ratio and selection of human subject. It also shows the diversity of members in the IRB committees to ensure that their decisions are objective.
The vital part of the content was the monitors who randomly control documentation and consent forms during the IRB sessions. It ensures the protection of human subject from any violation of rules and regulations as many people are involved in checking the research process regarding the ethical issues.
