Good morning, Dr. Birkenstock, Mrs. Z, and fellow students. A minority group can be determined by the physical appearance and cultural practices that are different from those of a dominant group. Very often, unequal treatment is given upon the minority groups. Currently, discrimination against Muslim has grabbed peoples attention, because a record number of Muslim have reported religious discrimination claims. This has resulted in unwarranted surveillance, unlawful profiling, and targeting people based on religions faith status or nationality. The articles, Fear of a Muslim America by Cathy Young, Alarms Raised on Nominees Views on Islam by Laurie Goodstein, and Growing Concern in Michigan: Hate Crimes by Niraj Warikoo show that the rapid rise hates crimes, Americans attitude and actions, and the culture clash toward Muslim after 9/11 attack. After reading these articles, it is more clear that Islam was a peaceful religion hijacked by violent extremists.

First of all, hate crimes against Muslim Americans spiked dramatically after the September 11 terrorist attacks. Cathy Young informs us that more than 3000 people died on the morning of September 11, 2001, when U.S. civilian airliners crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center Nineteen members of Osama Bin Ladens al-Qaeda terrorist organization launched the attack (3). Since then, Peoples fear of this tragedy has formed Islamophobia, which is an unfounded fear and hostility toward Islam and Muslims that results in discrimination, bias, marginalization, and violence. Although Muslims only make up approximately 1 percent of the United States population, they accounted for about one-third of the religious discrimination claims filed last year(Laurie Goodstein 4). People typically use the excused of being afraid to justify why they discriminated against this minority group and started abuse and discrimination to them after September 11. The extreme actions of a few Muslims should not be considered representative of the entire groups. Violence typically isn’t representative of major Muslim values.

Second of all, Islamophobia has crossed the line from fringe rhetorical hysteria to active discrimination against U.S. citizens of the Islamic faith. A judge said an American Muslim could rape his wife with impunity because his religion allowed it (Cathy 4). However, this is a forcible inference by the judge. Anti-Muslim activist’s success comes from slander and makes extreme claims concerning Muslim-Americans. According to Lauries article, ”Silence has made these Islamic leaders across America potentially complicit in these acts,” Mr. Pompeo, who is the CIA director, has been chosen by President Trump to replace Rex Tillerson as secretary of state announced. However, the fact is that the heinous terrorist attack is nothing relate to Muslim. As we take a closer look at the purported evidence for ‘creeping Shariah,’ there is a lot of skewed and garbled facts (Niraj Warikoo). Muslims are widely discriminated against in America and throughout the world largely as a result of various historical, political and legal occurrences that have given way to accusations and misinformed assumptions that the Islamic religion is largely based on violence, extremism, and terrorism.

Third of all, the culture clash between Christianity and Mulsim is one of the major factors of why Americans discriminate against Muslim beside the 9/11 attack. As we have known, the United States remains a predominately Christian nation, with 78% of all adults identifying with Christian belief. The majority of traditional American holidays celebrate holy days and are related to Christian. Therefore, the exclusion of Muslims from major American holidays creates a sense of disconnect between Americans and Muslim-Americans. In accordance with Nirajs article, a white supremacist attacks on two mosques in New Zealand this month (1). The acts of violence against Muslim have been increasing rapidly by those discriminators. Cathy states, Americans limited tolerance for other religions (5). To illustrate, recently a Christian extremist who believes is a sin, admitted shooting dead an abortion doctor who was notorious for performing late abortions (5). It’s important to note that after multiple extreme incidences like this, Christians have not been generalized as a violent religious group. The same standards of racism generalizations have not been made because Christianity is so deeply rooted in American history. Anti-Muslim ties all Muslims to its most extreme branches. These prejudice generalities are not made when members of other major religions in America commit horrific acts motivated by their religion.

From what has been mentioned previously, we absolutely have to make that clear that our problem is the radicals, the terrorists. It is not the entire religion. Muslims are people just like any other Americans, and they have their own beliefs, which does not mean we should discriminate against it. The opposition has also been fueled by aggressive anti-Muslim activist and Americans inclination toward hysteria in the news. By allowing absolute rubbish against Muslims to be published, we are teaching our youth that it is okay to hate a group of people based on their religion alone. People are not born racist, it is taught.
