This assignment combines media and theoretical concepts to provide a comprehensive, empathetic, and sensitive focus in understanding of current approaches to classroom management issues in schools.
Choose a scenario:
The Scenario: In the prep classroom, Mikayla, 5 years old, is showing behavior by disrupting the class and showing signs of difficulties with emotional regulation, frustration, and avoiding work. Mostly when it is literacy, reading, and writing sessions. She has some difficulties reading, picking up sounds, and connecting those sounds to read words. She also has difficulties with communication as she frequently expresses ideas and gets confused when putting those ideas together.
This affects the classroom as she can distract other children; when she becomes emotional and can’t control her anger and frustration, other children look at her differently (exclusion by peers). There is a history of learning difficulties in Mikayla’s Family; her big sister, 11, has dyslexia and dysgraphia, and Mikayla’s dad has dyslexia. Her family is concerned that she has dyslexia, too, as she has difficulties with reading, writing, and communication.
Based on the previous scenario, answer the following:
What are the behaviours or issues?
How does this present itself in the classroom?
How does this affect individual well-being?
How does this affect overall classroom well-being?
What actions could you take to reinforce/establish a positive classroom and student wellbeing in this situation?
How would you maintain or reinforce positive classroom management and student wellbeing in a specific situation?
Guiding question: How would you maintain or reinforce positive classroom management and student wellbeing in a specific situation?
• Find the classroom management models and practices that we can apply to this case, but please DO NOT use the Glasser Model. And how this links with this case (Mikayla’s behavior) and my teacher’s philosophy. Some examples to look at and link with this case are the Lyford model, the Kagan model, the Responsive classroom model, positive behavior interventions and support, and the Canter model. Reference every single model and explain how it can be linked with Mikayla’s case. And how this can help the class as a whole.
• How will it be vital to implement social and emotional learning approaches in the classroom?
• Australian Teacher Standards: Know the students and how they learn their cultural background, interests, and strengths. Why is it important to build relationships with the students, teachers’ attitudes, pedagogies, differentiation, classroom organization, teacher professional reflection, plan implementation, and review? Introduce yourself and your personal philosophy of classroom management and student wellbeing:
Hello! My name is Ana
Today, we will discuss how to maintain or reinforce positive classroom management and student well-being in a specific situation.
My teacher’s philosophy
Each student is a capable learner; they can achieve and succeed. The key is to provide a positive environment where everyone belongs; all children’s ideas are valuable and included in our curriculum; equity and equality exist. Listening to children’s voices and interests. Identifying their strengths is vital to building a solid curriculum with high expectations where everyone can learn and participate. I strive to build trusted relationships with students and their families; open communication is essential to address students’ needs. I model lifelong learning, support inclusion, value respect, honesty, and empathy, and we help each other to understand the world better and become active learners and civic citizens. I strive for a student-centered approach, where every class focuses on real-life situations and how to apply those concepts in different contexts. I Embrace differentiation, problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking. Furthermore, embracing technology is vital for students to succeed in the 21st century and understand how technology works and what we can create with it. I implement Vygotsky’s social theory ZPD, where learners learn through social interactions with peers and knowledgeable others, working in groups, collaborating, thinking, and pairing.
