A causal argument is a series of interrelated paragraphs that speculate about the causes or effects of a phenomenon. When we speculate, we hypothesize about why something happened. The “something that happens” is called a phenomenon.
We do this all the time in casual conversation. Why did the White Sox have such a terrible season? Why was Donald Trump able to appeal to young or Latino voters? Why are eggs so expensive? Any time we speculate about the causes of a phenomenon, we are writing a causal argument.
The attached assignment is a BRAINSTORM ONLY. We are going to do a casual brainstorm of why a phenomenon exists OR the effects of a phenomenon.
Next week, we will choose one of our brainstorming topics and do some research to support our speculations. We may not come to “THE ONE TRUE REASON” for why a phenomenon exists, but we may come to a deeper understanding of how complicated certain phenomena are.
