An annotated bibliography is a list of citations for books, articles, and electronic sources. Each citation is followed by a brief descriptive and evaluative paragraph, known as the annotation, which is usually about 150 -200 words. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the cited source. THE PROCESS 1. First, locate and record citations for secondary sources: books, periodicals, and documents that may contain useful information and ideas on your Research Essay topic. Briefly examine and review the actual items to determine their relevancy. Then choose 3 works that provide support and perspective on your thesis. Remember, you need at least 3 minimum scholarly secondary sources for your final research paper. Primary sources are not included on the Annotated Bibliography. 2. Cite the book, article, or document using the appropriate style, in this case MLA. 3. Write a concise annotation that summarizes the central theme and scope of the book or article. You should try to also include one or more sentences that (a) evaluate the authority or background of the author, (b) comment on the intended audience, (c) compare or contrast this work with another you have cited, or (d) explain how this work illuminates your research topic.
