Read the instructions for Major Writing Project 2. Choose one or more articles from the textbook (look for the green titles in the Table of Contents, no student-written examples), and consider some of its major points. Consider the following questions about your chosen article in at least 150 words:
What about the article appeals to you?
What are the warrants that the article assumes but does not state?
Are there any particular points that you really agree with or disagree with?
What about the article looks like it could be rebutted? What about it could be improved upon, or what is it leaving out?
Writing about an article in this reflection does not commit you to writing about it for MWP 2, the purpose is simply to practice some of the critical thinking skills we discussed in class.
this is
the instructions for Major Writing Project 2 down below
Description: Drawing on Chapter 8, “Evaluation Arguments,” in Read, Reason, Write as well as the articles we have read for our in-class discussions, challenge one of the arguments made in an article from anywhere in the textbook (look for the green article titles in the Table of Contents, may not be a student written example). In constructing your refutation or rebuttal argument, keep in mind the guidelines of our textbook (pg. 199) and class lectures:
Read Accurately: Do not fall into the straw man fallacy
Pinpoint Weaknesses in Original Argument: Be sure to analyze the writer’s claims
Write Your Claim: Make sure your thesis is one with which others may disagree; it should challenge the original writer’s logic, assumptions, evidence, analysis, or all of these
Use a Logical Organizational Structure: For example, you might use the following structure: restate (fairly) the writer’s argument; state your claim; and develope your refutation/rebuttal
Audience: Your audience is the author of the paper and a general audience within their field of specialty. You can assume, for the purposes of this exercise, that your audience agrees with the assertions made in the article you have chosen. Since your audience will initially be assumed as resistant to your point of view, it is essential that you carefully craft your rebuttal respectfully and professionally to convince your audience of your good-faith intentions.
