Writing Assignments/Assessments Content
Question
Before we add researched material into an essay as support for our ideas, we must first know why and where we want to incorporate that support. This crucial step in the researched writing process ensures that the outside information brought in has been thoughtfully selected and thoroughly incorporated. In turn, that will help you to avoid accidental plagiarism and make the task of writing the paper much easier.
Fill out the attached chart with the following information about your two sources. These two sources must be in addition to The Midnight Library.
MLA formatted works cited entries for each source
For the online source, use the format on page 346 of your Bedford Handbook.
For the database source, you can copy the MLA works cited entry provided by the source, but you must correct any formatting errors by using the example on page 336 of your handbook.
Summaries of both sources’ main ideas and contents
Here you will give a comprehensive, but brief, overview of what ideas and information are provided by the source.
It must be entirely in your own words.
This information must be cited in-text, either as a signal phrase at the start of the summary or a parenthetical citation at the end. Use pages 313-323 of your handbook for guidance on formats of in-text citations.
Do not use first or second person in the summary.
Explanations of both sources’ usefulness to your essay
Why you selected this particular source.
What specific information you plan to bring in from the source.
Where it will go in the essay.
The majority of this information must be in your own words, but you are also allowed to quote directly from the source. Any quoted material must be in quotation marks.
All information must be cited in-text. Use pages 313-323 of your handbook for guidance on formats of in-text citations. Even if you did not quote directly, an in-text citation must be provided for all paraphrases!
Do not use second person in the explanation.
Download the attached chart, enable editing, fill it out with the above information, save it to your computer, and then attach the completed document to your assignment submission. Your attached file must be either a .doc or .docx file. No PDFs, links, or work submitted directly to the textbox will be accepted.
