For my Final Research Essay, on the selling of sex and the popularity of sites that sell x rated material such as only fans. More specifically, I want to look at how this effects the decriminalization (scale/ how prevalent are arrest or criminal punishment, how much of a priority is it for law enforcement) of prostitution, in addition to the history of sex and prostitution as one of the oldest professions, and how it has effected art, entertainment, and culture to this day.
I have two main sources identified. The first is a show/ documentary on Amazon Prime called How Sex Changed the World, by the History channel. The show goes throughout history with a twist, since ancient times sex has played a pivotal role in everything from religion, politics, and culture.
My second major source, at this point is an article called “Why is prostitution criminalized? An alternative viewpoint on the construction of sex work,” by Rebecca Hayes‐Smith and Zahra Shekarkhar. This article touches on alternative constructions of prostitution such as decriminalization or legalization are backed by more support and can be asserted to be more just or fair from a legal standpoint and a public health perspective.
I will mention, here, that I am also planning to personally sit down and interview some sex workers, and pimps I know to get their firsthand point of view. The information I get from them will further inform my understanding of the profession, and figure into my essay. Overall, my idea for this essay is to lay out a history and vision of sex and prostitution how it became criminalized, the similarities with and rise of sites like only fans, the small population of those who identify as sex workers, it’s very important contributions to not only American culture but it being one of the oldest occupations dating back to biblical times, and where the professions maybe headed in the future
