Assessment Brief: Critically appraise your leadership style in practice based on your formative
assessment, demonstrating insight into your leadership potential. To meet the tested learning
outcomes, you are required to provide critical appraisal of how you have demonstrated your leadership
style in practice while caring for patient(s). You will also analyse your leadership strength and areas for
development supporting this with up to date and extensive evidence.
You need to make references to leadership styles and relevant current health and social care issues
(e.g. Chief Nurse’s 6 C’s, NHS Outcomes Framework, Francis Report, King’s Fund).
ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:
Introduction (200 words). An introduction generally needs to answer these 3 questions.
a. What? The introduction must begin by clearly explaining what the essay is about. This section needs to explain in your own words what is required in the assignment brief given above.
b. How? The second part of the introduction need to outline how the essay is structured.
c. Why? An introduction needs to articulate why the topic under consideration is of significance to your professional career.
LO1: Critically examine the principles for engaging people and communities within the context of health and wellbeing and how success can be measured and evaluated (300 word) Define leadership within the context of the NHS and specifically nursing and briefly explain why good leadership is key to nursing practice (eg Mid Staff’s enquiry, Berwick Report, Francis Report) Provide brief profile of clinical area where you were tasked to lead care of patient(s) client (s).
Briefly discuss your preferred leadership style and how this was relevant to your situation (think about delegation of
tasks, skills of your team and health needs of your patients and why it was important you adopt the leadership style). –
LO2: Demonstrate the principles of effective leadership, management, group and organisational dynamics and culture and apply these to team working and decision-making (300 words).
Discuss how you adopted and applied the principles of your chosen leadership style to manage your team, patients/
client(s) and clinical decisions you made and why (You may want to discuss what are key characteristics of your
chosen leadership and how you applied these to make sure safety of patients and team was promoted and support
your discussion with update and relevant extensive evidence). -.
LO3: Critically appraise the application of evidence and when drawing on experience to make evidence informed decisions in all situations (300 words). – Critically appraise how your clinical leadership judgements and skills were based on up to date and appropriate evidence (you might want to think about, NMC, NICE guidelines, Clinical audits, and government policies and the significance of these upon health needs of your patient(s). You may also want
to discuss what framework, policies, protocols and evidence guided your acts and omissions to make sure safe
and timely recovery of your patients and safety of your team members).
LO4: Appraise the demands of professional practice and demonstrate how to recognise signs of vulnerability in themselves or their colleagues and the action required to minimise risks to health (300 word).

Based on your experience as a leader, appraise the demands of leadership in nursing profession and how you were able to recognise areas of your vulnerability as well as of your team and what actions you took to address or avoid these (You may want to think about how you identify health needs of patients and allocated tasks accordingly, how you
liaised with seniors such as PA, PS to address concerns due to your limitations and support these with up to
date and relevant evidence).
LO 5: Communicate effectively using a range of skills and strategies with colleagues and people at all stages of life and with a range of mental, physical, cognitive, and behavioural health challenges (300 words)
Provide detailed discussion on how you communicated with your team including relevant MDT and their impact upon health needs of your patient(s) or client(s) (You may want discuss whose skills and services were relevant to your patients, eg physio, doctors etc and why, what was their roles and how did these impact upon health needs of patients, how did you communicate with patients, relatives/carers and support these with up to date and relevant evidence)
LO6: Critically appraise how the quality and effectiveness of nursing care can be evaluated in practice and demonstrate how to use service delivery evaluation and audit findings to bring
about continuous improvement (300 word). -Provide critical appraisal of how you measured the quality of care provided by you and your team and how these were significant in promoting safe care to the patient(s) or client(s). (You may want to critically appraise how you measured the quality of care provided by your team and what evidence, how
was this significant to patients’ health outcomes and to continuation of care or lifespan, support these).
LO7: Evaluate the importance of integrated health and social care (300 word).
Evaluate how you and your team worked closely to promote effective and timely integrated health care to meet health needs of your patient(s) or Client(s). (You may want to evaluate about planned discharges, referrals to other team and why this was significant support these with up to date and relevant
evidence. Also think about how you worked closely with key members of the team and how this facilitated your role
as a leader in meeting health needs and promotion of teamwork, support this with clear and detailed up to date and
relevant evidence).
Conclusion (200 words).
