Week 12: Discussions – ID It! (Part 4 of 5) Infections of the Nervous System – 2024-2-SCI251-01 2
The central nervous system is remarkably resistant to infection, largely because of a barrier between the blood circulation and the nervous tissue, referred to as the blood-brain barrier. Although not common, there are cases where a pathogen invades the nervous system and causes disease. These infections can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoans, or prion-associated.
Address the following criteria in your main response to this week’s discussion:
Choose ONE disease that is caused by a bacteria, virus, fungus, protozoan, or prion discussed in your textbook.
Describe the pathogen associated with the disease, how the pathogen leads to disease, and how it enters the body. Your discussion should also discuss the major signs and symptoms of the disease and the treatment for the infection.
Then, provide a case study highlighting your chosen disorder. Please do not identify the common name for the disorder in this response. Ask your peers to help you diagnose the disease! Please ensure that you check the discussion frequently to see if your peers have reached the correct diagnosis.
Be sure to add at least one reference (using APA) which exemplifies where you learned about the material. This could be your e-text or another source. If you submit a video response, be sure to add a text response with your reference.
All submissions should be in your own words. If you quote material, be sure to clearly identify these statements in quotations.
