My novel Mystic River’s primary theme is the impact that the past can have over the lives of people. The past events you have been through have affected your feelings, your personality traits, and your future actions. While not particularly deep is the relationship between Sean, Dave, and Jimmy, Dave’s abduction and molestation brings them together for life. Sean and Jimmy realise that their lives would have been quite different if they got in the car that day. Dave does not understand why the kidnappers picked him and does not explain what happened to him.
Firstly, I want to talk about my Mystic River book. David Boyle, Jimmy Marcus, and three 11-year-old friends in a neighbourhood in Boston, Sean Devine, are playing together. Two people drive by in a car as they dance. The men are ask the boys if they want to go on a drive. Although the loss of Jimmy and Sean, David agrees. He gets into the car and for four days is not seen. When he comes back, he’s supposed to be molested. In his time away, he never explains what happened to him, and he faces his decision for the rest of his life to drive the car. The novel uses the trauma of the boys as a springboard for the rest of the story, especially Dave Boyle’s. Twenty-five later, the plot takes up. Boyle is married now, but he continues to suffer from depression and anxiety, and he has some ‘urges’ that he has been trying to suppress for a while. Sean Devine is a Boston murder detective. The storey suggests that in his personal life he has issues. Jimmy Marcus has been in gaol for some time but has been released since then and now owns a shop. When the nineteen-year-old daughter of Jimmy is murdered, the three friends come together again to try and make sense of another tragedy.
Secondly, I would like to talk about the film I picked Cloud Atlas, a 2012 epic science fiction film that the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer wrote and directed. Adapted from David Mitchell’s 2004 novel of the same name, the film has multiple plots that unfold in six various eras in time, Mitchell described it as ‘a kind of calligraphic series.’ The theme of the film describes it as ‘an epic in which our lives have an effect on each other in the past, the present and the future, as one soul is transformed from a murderer to a saviour, and a single act of kindness breaks out.
Finally, the poet Donna tries to say in the poem Changing the Past that the mistakes we make in the past have an effect on our present and future. The author expresses the message that one should let go of the past, it’s not changeable, and we can’t do anything about it. The best we can do is to learn from our past mistakes and strengthen our future by trying to avoid making the same mistakes again. The reason the author felt the need to write this poem was because in the past her brother had some bad choices that led to depression. She was trying to talk to him, but he just didn’t want to open up and let it go. Then she decided to write and dedicate this poem to her brother.
To conclude, I want to say that the past definitely affects the present, but how we approach it is up to us. We can either feel depressed or learn from our mistakes and try not to repeat it again. This essay shows how these characters have a tragic past and how they have been affected not only by their present but also by their future. It’s important to learn from your past mistakes because it can make you and your personality better and make your lives better.
