Organizational structure refers to the system encompassing fundamental activities within a particular enterprise that define its operating procedures and routine rests, as well as the general hierarchy and authority within the organization. Within a broad range of organizational structures and collaboration types, it is crucial to adopt an adequate design for the company, division, or team. With this said, it is feasible to change the organizational structure in the short term; however, such a rapid transformation might have negative consequences. More specifically, as described by Robbins and Coulter (2018), the organizational structure is a formal arrangement of jobs within a company (p. 275). Therefore, its quick change might lead to losing control due to sudden alterations, particularly the big ones.
A rapid change is possible as it might reinforce the companys flexibility and ability to respond to the environmental modifications in the organization promptly. The structural transformation in the organization is a critical step to adhering to the external market changes and increased customer demands (Devaney, 2021). However, in practical terms, the quick change might be damaging compared to the coherent, time-consuming, and well-thought-of transformation. A rapid change might be successful if there are several management levels and it addresses the companys needs and objectives.
Nevertheless, I believe that organizational change should not be implemented in the short term because it is a primary task for the company to remain competitive and make well-planned and practical decisions. Based on Robbins and Coulters (2018) research, structure determines the chain of command and how roles and duties are allocated to help the organization achieve the target goals. Therefore, employees require a sufficient amount of time to adjust to new responsibilities within a changed organizational structure. Due to the current technological advancements incorporated into the business, enterprises must change and adapt to the new environment. Nonetheless, any organizational change must be performed as a transparent and long-term process to avoid severe pitfalls and risky damage to the company.
