I am applying for a Masters Program in the intellectual property law offered at KoGuan Law School of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. By reading the course curriculum I have found out that the subjects offered in this program will best suit my career goals. On top of that, the prospect of studying at Shanghai Jiao Tong University for Masters Program is an excellent way to observe divergent information systems, as well as build upon my cultural cognizance.
My educational background had an extremely strong impact on my development as a lawyer and on my interests, which therefore, consequently influenced my decision to pursue graduate studies at KoGuan Law School of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
In 2017, I graduated from Tbilisi State University with a bachelors degree of law majoring in International Law. I was fortunate enough to be in a community where I was given an abundance of educational opportunities. Tbilisi State University is known for its academic rigor, and I took full advantage of this as a student, taking as many advanced courses and electives as I was allowed. The more I was studying, the more determined I was to continue learning through university and beyond. At my university most of my study materials was based on English Language literature and articles from the contemporary law journals. I have participated in many law schools, which was solely in English. Besides these activities, I had been studying Legal English as a compulsory subject for the whole 4 years at university. I graduated from university with honors and was nominated as one of best in the class. This gave me more confidence and motivation to continue my studies abroad. After doing some research in Georgia, I was interested in Cyber Security and International Cyber Security Law. Sooner, I got Cisco Cyber Security Scholarship, which let me enhance my basic knowledge in cyber security. Scholarship lasted for 3 months, during which many professors and experts from Washington were helping students like me, to master basics of cyber security though online classes.
Before I moved to China, I have been working in the Academic Department of International Law Students Association. ILSA was a place, where I improved my social skills through communicating with students, helping them with projects also making educational projects and open lectures. During my third year of studies at university, I was an intern lawyer in a local governments law firm. Usually, as an intern my main responsibilities included but not limited to draw up a complaint for clients or to represent them in a court. Internship made me stay outside of my comfort zone due to the fact that it was my first official job. I was taught how to adjust to the professional environment, handle the critical situations and etc. Besides doing my major studies in Georgian, I was the enthusiastic citizen, who was involved in many extracurricular activities, such as seminars, charity projects, public speeches and debates (I am the debate champion in my university in 2016). Lastly, with all of the responsibilities at hand, I remained vigilant with my academic performance. Even after I left Georgia and moved to China, I still try to be involved in many activities, which is a scope of my interest. I often go to the public lectures. Recently I have been a judge of National High School Academics Debate and Speech competition. I gained a huge experience while working with high school students.
Chinese Foreign Investment Law has been a subject of my interest ever since I moved to China. Georgian Law and Chinese Law is quite different from each other, which makes it more interesting for me to explore. I want to learn the fundamental principles of Chinese Private and Public law and compare it to Georgian domestic law. Its not simple to tell beforehand, exactly what my thesis will be about, but I am really into Chinese Foreign Investment law and Cyber Security law and Data protection Law. During my studies at KoGuan Law School, I wish to make a research about Chinese Foreign Investment law in comparison with International Investment law. I would like to explore deep into Chinese Foreign Investment law and its nature, developing stages and its history. I main goal is to outline the history of it up to the present in the legal prospects. If given the opportunity, as a part of masters thesis I want to connect bachelors experience with knowledge gained in China. I know, that the second year of studies, will be full of hard work complemented with internship, which seems to be exciting and productive and I am looking forward to that. I understand, that sometime I may need to use study materials and sources in Chinese language, thats why I currently studying Chinese and by the end of July 2018, I will be on intermediate level, which will help let me explore Chinese law from the original sources as well.
It requires a lot of practice and learning to be a good lawyer, but without the knowledge of foreign languages, one might fail to become a successful lawyer, especially in Georgia. There is a very small number of lawyers in Georgia, who speak Chinese. But there are almost no Georgians in China, who knows Chinese law. Since the friendship between China and Georgia is developing and many Georgians come to China not only as a tourist but also to for studying and doing mutual businesses, sometimes they may need legal consultations solely in Georgian language in order to avoid problems during registration in China. Knowledge of Chinese law as a master will make me more valuable on job market in Georgia. After I complete my studies in China, I will be able to apply Chinese law in Georgia as well by working as a lawyer, and will be able to give legal consultations not only in Georgian, English and Russian, but also in Chinese and about Chinese law too.
The reason why I decided to study law in KoGuan Law School in Shanghai Jiao Tong University and what makes this school special is the fact that Shanghai Jiao Tong University is one of top universities in China, based on the recent ranking. There is no doubt that atmosphere, where you pursue your studies is also important, and thats why I fall in love with KoGuan Law School, because of its campus, which I personally think that its the most beautiful campus among the other campuses of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Its worth mentioning that I have special attachment to China and Chinese culture. Shanghai is my favorite city among those, which I have visited during my stays in China. I believe, people from Shanghai are one of the most hospitable people in the world. I am going to pursue the schedule of the university in order to maintain the effective learning progress. If I am lucky and I am chosen, I will dedicate all my time and energy to study as hard as I can. Law school will let me improve my skills as a lawyer and as an active resident. Hence, I plan to take part in activities such as: conferences, culture events and other activities related to my studies.
During my studies in China, I plan to remain communication with my fellow peers in Georgia. Periodically, I am blogging on social networks. My blogs are about China, its culture, education and traveling. Studying in China with Chinese government scholarship is a huge experience, which needs to be shared with others. I plan to take notes and make shared diaries about this experience. Besides making educational blogs about daily life in China, I am also thinking about video vlogging, in order to share my experience with my fellow Georgians and let them see China and its beauty in real-time. This way, I am sure that they will get a motivation to find more information about Chinese culture and even start learning Chinese. Georgian and Chinese languages have a very different writing systems and this is the reason, why many Georgians think that it is too difficult to study Chinese. My aim is to ruin this myth and agitate them to start learning Chinese language and culture. I believe that soon, Chinese will become as important language for every Georgian citizen, as it is now English language.
With all of my experience listed, I am in search of bringing my career to the next level. The subjects offered in this program are specifically in line with my professional goals. Additionally, to study 2 years in China, provides a great grounding in which to further experience divergent cultures and exchange knowledge. I am certain that the knowledge and skills learnt from my professional experience, university, and extracurricular activities would make me a valuable addition to the Master’s of Chinese Law Program offered at KoGuan Law School of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
