To begin, I am honored just by being one of few students to be nominated to take part in the National Honor Society. Id be delighted to join a society like this one because of the countless opportunities it would offer me. Joining this society would help me improve as a person. It would also help my abilities grow as well as encourage me to help out others. I believe that my great character and academic determination, leadership skills, and service make me a strong candidate for the NHS.
By being determined to do well in school, it says a lot about my character. Being committed to help out in church and keeping my grades high can sometimes be a bit too much to balance. I keep high grades in all my six classes even though some days I get home late, due to my commitment in church or other necessities, and have to stay up later than usual on weekdays to get all my work done for the proceeding day. There are days where I decide to stay up even later to work ahead on school work, so it will lighten up the amount of work for the next day. Whenever there is something that I dont understand, I ask many questions until I gain the knowledge I was seeking. Sometimes even when my questions are answered, and I still do not understand, I will stay a few minutes after school to get clarity on the topic. Whenever I know that I will be missing school for a day or more, I ask all my teachers for any work that will be done when Im gone; therefore, when I return, I will be caught up. What matters to me most in school are my grades, and it is a necessity for me to keep them high and not to let them drop.
In my opinion, and others as well, I see myself as a natural leader. At the end of my freshman year, I got involved in a youth group for young ladies at the church I attend. At first, my role was just to follow what the leaders said, but eventually, when those leaders finished the program, I became one of the new leaders. The lady who ran the program acknowledged my hard work and commitment towards wanting to make the city a better environment that she appointed me as a leader to a group of young ladies from ages 13-14. There were times that it was hard to get the small group to all work together, but little by little, we grew trust towards each other, and, with the effort of all, we were able to all agree on decisions and have great communication. Although there were times that I often wanted to do things the way that I believed was correct, I became open minded, and before coming to a conclusion, I asked for the opinions and input of all the other ladies in the group. Growing up, I was taught to always respect adults and to be polite, no matter how small something was. Because of this, I have been able to form great relationships with my teachers and even with adults I have barely met. I believe that by being honest, you gain trust. Thus, I am honest in school by not committing any academic dishonesty, or cheating. This is something that is important to me because I like to stay true to my own ideas, and it highly reflects what I consider personal values. To be a role model, I feel that you have to know how to communicate with others like a leader does.
Lastly, I have helped out in my community by volunteering to stay after church hours to clean up the building. Last summer, since I had more free time, I helped out for two hours almost everyday whenever I could. My time there was definitely not gone to waste. While I volunteered there, I was able to grow relationships with adults and also, be able to also grow spiritually in my beliefs. I definitely believe that helping out at my church made me a better person. I look forward to continue to volunteer there in my free time and in the summer.
